Prime Minister Harper is using his latest budget bill to seize unprecedented
power over the CBC. Independent public media is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy,
and we canot stand by and let the CBC be silenced and controlled for partisan political gain.

Dear Friend,
 Jian Ghomeshi, Carol Off, Peter
Mansbridge and every other journalist and creative person at the CBC
will be beholden to Stephen Harper if he succeeds in the biggest
and most sinister media takeover Canada has ever seen.
Harper has no mandate to turn Canada’s national public broadcaster into a state broadcaster, yet this is exactly what he wants to do.
Instead of delivering on his election promise to maintain or increase CBC funding, he is seeking tocontrol and silence our CBC.
The Omnibus Budget Bill would make Harper theultimate boss of
every CBC employee by giving the government complete control over the wages and working conditions of
all CBC staff.
CBC must operate at arms length from government. Even the perception that CBC journalists
are pulling punches or program decisions are made in favour of political masters would be
disastrous for the CBC and Canadian democracy.
Let’s not allow this to happen. Canadians value and need a strong and independent
public broadcaster. FRIENDS is working in collaboration with Leadnow.ca to ramp up this
campaign quickly.
