Save the Amazon - Sign the Petition! (Avaaz)
The Amazon forest is at risk . The Brazilian Congress has watered down strict forest protection laws and brave Brazilian activists are being murdered for speaking out . It’s time for us to take this critical battle global -- if we all call on President Dilma to veto the bill, we could save the Amazon .
Clean-Air Crusaders Suffer Setback in "The Battle in the Boreal"
by Larry Powell ROBLIN, MB Se 10-2010 Environmentalists and citizens battling to protect air quality in parts of the Swan valley of western Manitoba have suffered a setback. “Paths Less Travelled” has just learned, Manitoba’s Clean Environment Commission is recommending that Louisiana Pacific Canada Limited’s wood products plant near Minitonas, be allowed to continue to operate without the use of pollution control devices. For complete report, go to http://www.cecmanitoba.ca/hearings/index.cfm?hearingid=1#4 and click on "results," then "PDF." Opponents of LP’s application to keep those controls (known as regenerative thermal oxidizers) shut down permanently, have yet to comment on the recommendations, which were just made public today. Groups such as “Concerned Citizens of the Valley” had been strongly opposing the shutdown, claiming it would lead to sharply increased releases of toxic substances from the plant, into the air. Manitoba’s Minister of th
The Future of Air Quality at a Big Manitoba Wood Products Plant is Now in the Hands of the Minister
Au 24-2010 - by Larry Powell Important recommendations on what the Manitoba Government should do about controlling pollution from a big wood products plant in the province, are now in the hands of the Minister of Conservation, Bill Blaikie. Louisiana Pacific Canada's OSB mill near Swan River. Photo by Larry The Clean Environment Commission, an "arms-length" advisory agency, began last year to look into the merits of a government decision almost 20 months ago, to allow "temporary" closure of pollution control devices at Louisiana Pacific's "oriented strandboard" plant in the Swan Valley of western Manitoba. Certain toxic emissions have apparently been escaping into the air around the plant, near the Village of Minitonas, since that time. The Commission will recommend that the devices should either be started up again, or closed permanently. The agency says it submitted its report to Blaikie on Aug. 16th, but, he was away, so wouldn't have seen
More on Boreal Forest Agreement
Response from Canadian Boreal Initiative Re: My Concerns about the 'Boreal Forest Agreement' (Peter Miller) Clearcutting in the Duck Mtn. by Mary Jane Eichler FOLKS, FOR THOSE FOLLOWING THE RECENT BOREAL FOREST AGREEMENT, HERE IS AN EXCHANGE BETWEEN LARRY INNES OF THE CANADIAN BOREAL INITIATIVE AND JOHN HUMMEL. THANKS TO BOTH FOR THIS POSTING. Dear Larry, Thanks for writing back regarding some of my concerns regarding this agreement. I will share your response with others who have similar concerns. I did include a link to the leaked version of the agreement in my email to everyone so they would have an opportunity to see everything in context and make their own judgment. As you may be aware, there is now a longer version of the agreement now on the internet at: http://vancouver.mediacoop.ca/sites/mediacoop.ca/files2/mc/Final.pdf Since this agreement has implications for all Canadians and Indigenous Nations, I was surprised that none of the signatories to this a
BFN Does Not Support New “Canadian National Boreal Forest Agreement”
For Immediate Release - May 26, 2010 “This agreement is not transparent, does not include the involvement of governments, nor First Nations and the boreal forest is still at risk,” said Susanne McCrea, Executive Director of the Boreal Forest Network. The agreement really does not protect woodland caribou, as it only defers logging and road construction in 72,205 ha over the next two years and not the supposed 29 million hectares that the signatories told the public, on May 18th. The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, signed by Canadian forest products companies and several prominent environmental groups, will make it more difficult for ENGOs to effectively campaign against large scale resource extraction by the Canadian forest industry and sidelines Indigenous Peoples rights to plan, manage and control activities on their traditional territories.
