Can we really have our cake and eat it, too? Obviously, the Government of Manitoba believes we can! It has thrown its support behind a highly questionable, $200m “carbon capture” project planned for the southwest region. An energy expert warns there are far cheaper and more effective ways of reducing emissions, and that it may even devour more energy than Manitoba Hydro can supply! Spitting in the face of all of this, our Environment Minister is “excited” and our Premier has promised legislation to help make it happen. Details on how many public dollars will go toward its construction are bound to follow. While conceding it would be no “silver bullet,” these two seem not to understand that building more pipelines will surely produce vastly more carbon than the project can capture. Having our fossil fuels and no climate change, too? Climate illiteracy at its finest.
