Save British Columbia's Fish Lake From an Open-Pit Mine!

Dear Larry, There is only a week left to have your say on Taseko’s proposed open-pit mine at pristine  Fish Lake, a sacred place of ceremony and gathering for the Tsilqhot’in people and the  heart of a watershed that supports unique rainbow trout, at-risk grizzly bears, and  sustainable  local economies that respect the ecosystem. Take action. If this mine goes ahead, Fish Lake will be cut off from its network of streams and creeks, and completely surrounded by vast craters and slag heaps. The company proposes to put the lake on “life support” in perpetuity using unprecedented and untested recirculation technology. Meanwhile, Little Fish Lake would be sacrificed for a tailings pond. The federal environmental review panel is currently holding hearings and will be accepting written comments until August 22. Please take action now. Official submissions to the panel from both provincial and federal ministries refuted the company's claims that the project will "save" Fish Lake. According to Natural Resources Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Taseko may have underestimated the seepage from its tailings pond by as much as 11 times.  B.C.’s Ministry of Energy and Mines concluded that the project cannot be developed as currently designed “without adverse effects to the water quality of Fish Lake” and its tributaries, even with expensive and long-term measures. This is our last chance to speak up for Fish Lake. Let's make sure the government listens to its own scientists and rejects this environmentally and culturally destructive mine.
