Dear Larry,
I’m delighted to share some good news with you!
It was announced yesterday that a final agreement
was made to transfer operation of the Experimental
Lakes Area (ELA) to the International Institute for
Sustainable Development (IISD). We applaud the
IISD and the Governments of Ontario and Manitoba
for creating a new home for the ELA.

This incredible achievement for Canadian science
highlights how science advocacy can make a difference.
This victory was made possible because you signed
petitions, attended rallies, wrote letters to the editor
and contacted your politicians. Thank you for joining
the effort to ensure that the ELA continues to be a
world-class aquatic research facility.
We hope that this marks a new beginning for the ELA
and that the scientists will enjoy a new freedom at the
IISD to explore pressing research questions and freely
communicate their scientific findings to the public.
In other news, we have a special event happening
tomorrow at 5pm in Ottawa with Dr. Munir Sheikh,
the former Chief Statistician of Canada. Dr. Sheikh
will be giving a talk on the need for public policies
to be informed by evidence. The event will be live
streamed so you can watch from home if you’re not
in Ottawa. You can find the details here.
If you missed the “Governing in the Dark” public
lecture that Scott Findlay recently gave at Dalhousie
Sincerely,
Katie Gibbs
Executive Director
P.S. We have an exciting announcement coming
next week - stay tuned!
